Statehood Day Features History Detective Wes Cowan
Annual Advocacy Day Sponsored by Ohio’s History and Preservation Interests
(COLUMBUS, OH) - Wes Cowan of the popular PBS shows History Detectives and Antiques Roadshow will be the keynote speaker for a Statehood Day event March 3 in the Statehouse Atrium, announced Burt Logan, executive director and CEO of the Ohio Historical Society. Cowan will join history and preservation advocates in recognition of Ohio's statehood and to promote the state's rich heritage.
"We're excited to have Wes Cowan as this year's luncheon speaker for Statehood Day," Logan said. "Through his television appearances, he has helped to promote an appreciation of history and historic preservation to a national audience."
Cowan, who is founder and owner of Cowan's Auctions in Cincinnati is an internationally recognized expert in historic Americana. He appears on the PBS series History Detectives and is a featured appraiser on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow. After receiving his doctorate from the University of Michigan, he taught at the Anthropology Department of Ohio State University and later was curator of archaeology at the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History. In 1995, Cowan left the museum world to return to his childhood love - antiques. Since then, Cowan's Auctions has grown from a one-man shop to a nationally recognized business generating $20 million in annual sales.
Statehood Day commemorates Ohio's founding on March 1, 1803, the date when Ohio became the nation’s 17th state. This year, the Ohio Historical Society and nine partner organizations will sponsor a broad coalition of history advocates from communities throughout the state for a daylong legislative advocacy experience highlighted by meetings with state legislators to convey the vital role that history plays in Ohio.
The public is invited to join history advocates and professionals to help promote the importance of Ohio history to legislators at all or part of the daylong activities. Cost is $25, which includes lunch. Advanced registration is required by Feb. 19. For more information or to register, visit www.ohiohistory.org/StatehoodDay or call 800.686.1545.
Statehood Day is sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society, Heritage Ohio, the Ohio Academy of History, Ohio Archaeological Council, Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums, Ohio Council for Social Studies, Ohio Genealogical Society, Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board, Preservation Ohio and Society of Ohio Archivists.
