Archivist I, Government Records

Summary:
With direction of the state archivist, coordinates the pickup, accessioning, and processing of public records. Assists with the appraisal of public records. Creates and uses administrative tools to record and report on the appraisal, accessioning, and processing of public records. Establishes and maintains physical and intellectual control over public records held by the Ohio Historical Society.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Schedule public records pickups.
  • Accession records brought into the State Archives.
  • Prepare and supervise the creation of finding aids in electronic and hardcopy forms.
  • Prepare and enter online bibliographic records of public record series.
  • Review and reconcile discrepancies in finding aids, accessions, processing projects, and bibliographic records.
  • Maintain office files and database records pertaining to public records accessions and holdings.
  • Conduct historical research on state agencies, boards, and commissions.
  • Analyze unprocessed historical records to develop appraisal criteria and arrangement and description procedures.
  • Develop volunteer projects; coordinates volunteer activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises staff, interns, and volunteers processing public records.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
Master's degree in the humanities or the equivalent work experience plus one to three years relevant experience.

Certificates and Licensures:
Muse possess valid driver's license.

Language Skills:
Ability to follow complex written and oral instructions.

Mathematical Skills:
Requires basic mathematical skills.

Technical Skills:
Knowledge of AARC2, LCSH, and MARC. Database management and library automation skills required.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to pay attention to detail while completing repetitive tasks, to manage time effectively, and to exercise good judgment.

Physical Demands:
Requires prolonged sitting (chiefly at a computer terminal) and some bending, stooping and stretching. Also required on occasion is the lifting and moving of boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:
Majority of the work in this position is performed in an office environment; some takes place in the archives stack and storage area of the Ohio Historical Center and in the records storage areas of government offices and agencies. Requires travel throughout Ohio.
