Interpreter I

Summary:
Directly involves servicing visitors to the historic site. Involves the performance of a variety of tasks which contribute to the educational objectives of the historic site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads guided tours and develops and participates in special events, interpretive programs, and other activities of an educational nature, at times in historic era costume.
  • Performs routine cleaning and light maintenance and assists with operations of a safe, orderly, and efficient demonstration area.
  • May handle site admission and special event fees.
  • May patrol and perform light security work involving the public's safety and the protection of historic site property.
  • Works in admission, sales, or other interpretive or curatorial areas of the historic site, on an as-needed basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience:
High school graduate or the equivalent in training and experience. Prior work experience of six (6) months or more in a related position.

Language Skills:
A demonstrated ability to absorb factual information and to communicate effectively with the public in a rational and understandable manner.

Mathematical Skills:
Requires basic arithmetic skills needed to operate a cash register and/or make change.

Technical Skills:
Some knowledge of routine clerical work such as cash receipts, cataloging and other routine reports.

Reasoning Ability:
The person in this position must be able to carry out assigned duties with a minimum of supervision.

Physical Demands:
Requires frequent bending, reaching, stooping and kneeling. May require standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. May require lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires full range of eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires normal range of hearing and vision.

Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, and in all weather conditions. Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, water and wet working conditions. Frequent exposure to chemicals and other noxious fumes. Involves walking, speaking, and frequent contact with staff, volunteers, and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Weekend work and some irregular hours are required.
